What I Use

My Mobile Podcasting Setup:

Recorder: iRiver iFP-799 – these have been discontinued, but you can find them on eBay for $50-$150. Any 700- or 800-series iRiver will do, though I prefer the placement of 700-series microphone jack.

Giant Squid Audio Lab Mini Gold-Plated Omni Mic ($15)

RadioShack Tie-clip Microphone Windscreen (Item #33-4006 – $2.99 for 4)

For Recording and Editing at Home:

Blue Snowball USB Microphone ($100)

Apple Mac Pro 2.66GHz Quad Xeon running GarageBand

Do you still use this setup? In the interview at the Omni Parker hotel it sounded like you each had a mic. What was the configuration there? When passing the mic back and forth, do you control it, or allow your guest to hold it?

  2. Adam Says:

The Omni Parker House interview was done with the iRiver and one mic, as listed above. I just held the recorder and mic in my hand and moved it back and forth as we talked.

I would never let a guest hold the mic – he who controls the microphone controls the interview. I can end an answer quite easily by taking the mic away from a guest’s mouth, and I wouldn’t want to give that power to anyone but myself!
